The Equispec™ Film Thickness Analyzer and Probes can help you measure with the highest degree of accuracy multilayer films and coatings on plastics-blown film, co-extruded polymer, hard coating deposits on metals, coatings on glass, UV protection, and anti-glare.
Equitech’s non-contact, scattered light measurement can be used to measure thin films on automobile headlights and windshields, computer screens, architectural glasses as well as with many plastics applications. The technology has already been used to monitor the coating thickness on particles for paint, anti-glare film thickness on a moving belt and deposit of photosensitive compounds on a metal moving belt.
Film Thickness Analyzer has been designed to handle any such applications where the film is film is transparent or slightly translucent. The Equispec™ FTA can measure the thickness of single and multilayer films from .50 up to 300 microns and can separate the signals of up to 5 layers providing that the film exhibits good optical properties.
The Equispec Online Color Spectrophotometer and the Color Probe, Retro-Reflection Probe, Transmission Cells, and Polymer Melt Probes can measure with the highest of accuracy the color and consistency of many extruded foods and processed beverages.
Sauces, processed sugars, pastes, processed cereals and snacks where color is important can be continuously monitored (and controlled) typically with the Equitech polymer probes mounted in the food extruder or mixing tanks.
Beverages which require a consistent color (sodas, liquors, and juices) can be monitored (and controlled) with the Equitech Retro-Reflection Probe, Transmission Cell and Color Probe. Because of their small size, these fiber optic probes are ideal to mount directly in these processes.

A similar leak detector device has been developed which is used to detect remotely pump, tank and valve seal leaks. The technology is similar to Item 3 but has a different housing configuration. This device has been tested seismically and functionally.
Equitech’s fiber-optic probes have application in a variety of UV-vis measurements for the environmental arena.
For example, Equitech’s Retro-Reflection Probes are made from PEEK (Polyether Ether Ketone, a thermoplastic) and therefore have excellent mechanical and chemical resistance properties that are retained to high temperatures. Our clients use these in corrosive ocean water. Depending upon the location, Transmission Cells or Retro-Reflection Probes may also be used to check water clarity or monitor effluent. MBARI and Satlantic are two organizations currently using our probes for ocean monitoring.
Current uses include:
A very large potential application is the percentage of water in oil. The market according to epSolutions (Weatherford) for well monitoring has two major markets. They are new wells (40,000 to 50,000 per year) and retro-fit wells (15,000 per year). If only 10% of new wells would take advantage of Equitech’s technology along with the retro-fit wells, this is about 20,000 units per year.
Possible locations for this measurement are:
An oil field with 8 wells pumps a mixture of gas, oil and water to a satellite station for separation. The gas is separated first and pushed through the gas line, leaving behind the oil/water mixture. The oil company needs to know the percentage of water in the oil that is being pumped through the oil line to the customer. The price that they can charge is based upon the percentage of water in the oil. Currently, the oil company pulls samples for analysis in the laboratory. This methodology provides ‘snapshots’ of the product flow, but not a continuous ‘video’ of the transfer. Disagreements between the supplier and customer can amount to millions of dollars.
An Equispec™ Chemical Process Analyzer with a multiplexer and in-line probe can analyze 8 wells (pipes/lines) for oil/water in just one minute. Most wells today are only tested once per year.

The Equispec™ Online Color Spectrophotometer with the Reflection Polymer Melt Probe and/or the Transmission Polymer Melt Probe can measure with the highest of accuracy the color and consistency of many extruded polymers. The list includes PE, PP, PC Acrylics, Fluoropolymers, Nylons, PET, PVC ABS, PS and many more.
Besides providing a continuous measurement throughout the color compounding process, the Equitech system can be used as a process control tool to diagnose the extrusion line. Such things as yellowness (b*), feeder stability, screw wear, ideal temperature profile and screw speed are parameters that the OCS can monitor.
Use the OCS to understand and know when color changes are complete. This will save time, money and material.
Feedback loops via 4-20mA or OPC via a supplied Ethernet can allow for Closed Loop Control of the extrusion process. Such things as TiO2 control for L* can be realized with the system.
